Privacy Policy

Last updated 13/5/08

While our website is designed to look simple, we are very serious about looking after any personal information you submit to us. This policy sets out what we will and won't do with personal information you submit to us.

As a responsible charity with nearly 15 years experience campaigning with children, Living Streets is particularly careful about what information we collect, and how we use that information.

We will never share individual data with other organisations, unless compelled to by law. We are registered as a data controller with the Information Commissioner's Office

What do we collect data for?

We will collect information through this website:

  1. for the purposes of running competitions and contests
  2. for answering individual queries put to us by users of the website
  3. for consulting about the future of the walk to school campaign
  4. for informing people as the campaign develops
  5. for contacting people on social networks such as bebo and myspace.

How will we use this data

Case 1: for the purposes of running competitions and contests

In the rare case that we need to contact an individual personally (they have won a competition for instance), we will first try to contact them through their school. If this is unsuccessful, only then will we use their personal data to contact them.

Case 2: for answering queries put to us by users of the website

If we are contacted through the website, we will endeavour to answer your query. In this case we will not add you to any of our contact lists, but may keep a record of the question.

Case 3 and Case 4: for keeping in touch with you as we develop the campaign.

These sorts of messages will only be sent to people who have specifically chosen to receive them. You can choose to unsubscribe from our e-mail mailing list at any time by clicking the links at the bottom of the e-mail, or by filling in this form. This will add your details to the list of people we will not e-mail.
So parents and teachers know what we are sending, we will post a generic copy of every bulk e-mail we send here.

Case 5: for contacting you on social networks

Social networks are now a big part of being a teenager. We may like to hook up on social networks such as facebook, myspace, bebo, MSN etc. We have a separate "opt in" for this. If you choose to allow us to contact you in this way, we will invite you once onto each network that we are both members of.
These third party services will have their own privacy policies which are outside our control.
If you don't want to hook up on any of these networks, refuse our friendship request and we won't ask again.

Cookies and Beacons

Our website may make use of cookies and beacons. Cookies are small text files stored on your machine, and beacons are small transparent image files. Neither contains any personal information, and we only use them to gather general information about how many people have visited the website, and which pages they have visited. You can read more about cookies and beacons at http://www.allaboutcookies.org/

Note for Parents and Teachers.

The internet is a very exciting place for students, but there are also risks. There are a number of great websites to help educate you and your children about the internet, cyber bullying and safe web surfing. Our favourite is http://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/ which has relevant spaces for different age groups, as well as pages for teachers, and parents. It is developed by the CEOP (Child Exploitation and Online Protection) centre in conjunction with young people. We have spoken with them as we developed this website.

Although we are asking students to get involved in helping us create our campaign, we are in overall control of what is posted on our website. This means all the content on this website has been looked at by a member of Living Streets and we consider it suitable for our site. If you disagree, please let us know, so we can review our decision.
